Alternative Provision TA Support (Part-Time Vacancy)
About Us
Teach Me Happy is an Alternative Provision based in Dunnington, York. We have been open since January 2023 and cater for students with Special Educational Needs and Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs. We have both primary and secondary cohorts, with most of our young people diagnosed as autistic with PDA profiles. Due to the expansion of our provision, as we open a specialist secondary school, we are looking for a TA to start with us from September 2024. The position would mainly be based in York, but some time would also be spent at our farm near Bubwith, where children are taught horse-riding, gardening and land-based skills.
Our Young People
We consider ourselves fortunate to be able to offer education and a nurturing environment to our local children, many of whom have significant difficulties with communication and regulation and many of whom have trauma-related behaviours. We also have many young people who struggle with anxiety and have missed lots of education and socialisation time with peers. Our students guide our teaching, as we constantly assess throughout the day to ensure that they do not become overwhelmed with their environment or what is being asked of them. One of our students remarked, that for the first time, they had found a place for them, a place where they could be themselves and be wholly accepted. Our children are quite simply at the heart of everything that we do and everything that we strive to be.
The Role
The role is varied and would include supporting lessons (KS2 National Curriculum and Functional Skills English and Maths) and activities (crafting, baking, land-based, forestry) across the week. Ensuring that children’s emotional well-being and safety comes first, as when children feel safe and secure and are happy, then they are ready to learn. Some driving may be necessary as children are transported across sites. The provision is open from 9:30-14:30 so the hours will be from 9:00-15:00.
The TA
We are specifically looking for a TA that has experience in a similar environment and understands the challenges that can arise throughout the day. Someone that is calm, patient and can think on their feet. Our children like adults to have a sense of humour and to be forgiving and kind. Experience of horse riding would be beneficial, as would someone with good gardening and cooking skills. The successful candidate will have Enhanced DBS and barring checks carried out before commencing employment.
